Goshawk

Goshawk is a powerful, stealthy bird of prey known for its fierce demeanor, broad wings, and long tail, allowing for agile flight through dense forests to ambush birds and mammals. A classic “true hawk” (Accipiter), it is the largest in its genus across much of its range, featuring bold white eyebrows and intense red eyes in adults. It is a tenacious predator that fiercely defends its nest.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance: Medium-large hawk with a broad white “eyebrow” stripe, deep red (adult) or yellow (juvenile) eyes, blue-gray back (adults), and finely barred gray-and-white underside. Long tail and short, broad wings for forest maneuverability.
  • Senses: Excellent binocular vision for targeting prey in dim forest light. Hearing is acute, but vision is primary.
  • Movement: Explosive, agile flier in dense woods; uses rapid wingbeats and glides. Known for relentless pursuit of prey.
  • Diet: Strict carnivore. Diet includes medium-sized birds (grouse, crows) and mammals (squirrels, hares, rabbits). An ambush hunter.
  • Behavior: Fiercely territorial and secretive, especially during nesting. Mostly diurnal. Builds large stick nests high in trees.
  • Habitat: Mature forests across the Northern Hemisphere (North America, Europe, Asia). Prefers large tracts of mixed or coniferous woodland.
